Here is the wood storage rack I made for my shop. I found the plans on another site that someone else had made. I modified it slightly. As you can see it holds alot of wood and is made from 2×4 and 2×2’s. The original rack was attached to the ceiling but mine is free standing.

Nice rack! (Last time I said that, the girl slapped me!)

Why did you taper the ends of the rails that are on the floor? Seems like that would make it less stabile.

Yeah, the floor strut should not have been tapered, although the flat section there is pretty wide. With all the heavier thicker pieces stored on the bottom, it's pretty stable.
Charlie,
That's quite the storage system you've got there! It looks to hold quite a bit of wood. It appears that the arms are about 4' apart, which might not provide enough support. How many 2x4s and how many 2x2s? What was the total cost?

The struts that the wood sit on are 5 ft wide. The lenght of the rack is adjustable and determined by the lenght of the horizontal supports. My rack is almost 12 ft long. The only thing I would have done differently, would be to not taper the bottom struts and I could add straight sections in between them , but I am careful not to make the load top heavy.
I don't remeber what it cost to build it 3 years ago. I moved it a few days ago to make room for my dust collector.
