Starting with the right equipment is important. Once you round up the equipment it is important to sharpen the turning tools properly or you will have no results at all. My book, The Lathe Book, published by Taunton Press (which also publishs Fine Woodworking Magazine and manages this website), would get you off on the right track. It has information on lathes chucks tools and techniques.
Going to a woodturning class (either one of mine or one of many others offered around the country) is also a great way to get going. Joining the American Association of Woodturners (http://www.woodturners.org) will give you access to lots of useful information.
Finally, the best of lathes and tools will not make you a turner. It takes practice so the best thing you can do once you sort out the equipment conundrum is to practice.
with best regards,
Ernie Conover
