I’m building a frame and panel desk. The top of the desk will be birdseye maple in the center, with a cherry frame about 6″ wide wrapped around it and a walnut inlay between the two woods.
The frame for the desk base will be cherry also, but the panels will be from maple. I’d like to use curly or figured maple but am not sure is might be too distracting or if it’s too many wood species.
Any opinions?

An old pal of mine who was trained in Germany when he was young was taught that " selection of the grain makes the craftsman " So , create a theme and perhaps curly wood around the drawers or use each type in a select area .

You need to be careful with wood movement here if you are using solid wood. When you wrap a frame around the maple you need to leave space for the maple to expand in summer and shrink in winter. That could be a problem for a desktop since the seasonal change could be in the range of a quarter of an inch or more.
Thanks. I planned on having the top made of mdf core with a birdseye veneer. I found it will be more economical for me to have it made by panoply corp. I'll then put the cherry and walnut on it myself.
That makes good sense and should work fine. Sounds like this will be pretty spectacular.
