I'm happy with the Record vise I have. I set the fixed jaw into a mortise so that the front edge of the bench is continuous across the vice. The moving jaw is mortised into a wooden jaw about 6" wider that the metal jaw. I inlaid strips of cocobolo inline with the rods. That way when I clamp a workpiece vertically on either side and line it up with the inlay, it's plumb. The quick release feature on the vice is very handy. I also drilled two rows of dog holes that straddle the vice in the bench top to take advantage of the built in stop.
