After all the complaints about Woodcraft and their clamp sale I wanted to share a positive experience that keeps me going back there. ( And BTW I have no connection with Woodcraft other than as a customer.)
Last week I had difficulty with my 2 speed Delta planer, checked and found the brushes were chewed up, called Delta, they sent new brushes, installed them, the motor was still not right (green sparks coming from the motor). I called my local Woodcraft store, asked them when I had bought it, they checked and found it was 46 weeks ago. I asked what I should do and they said bring it back and they would either give me a replacement or credit against the new Dewalt. Yesterday, I returned it and with full credit and bought the Dewalt.
All to say, yesterday, I was faced with what I thought could be a month or more delay in a boat project I am working on in order to return the planer to Delta but instead in 15 minutes I was back out the door with a new planer at Woodcraft. I had never had a problem with anything before but when this came up I was very glad to have bought from Woodcraft instead of saving $10-15 at Tool Crib or other mail order vendor. Hurrah for Woodcraft!!!
FWIW, those of you with the 2 speed Delta planer, my problem I think was unusual (at Woodcraft they said they had not had a similar problem) but when I called Delta they said the brushes should be replaced every 50 hours of use; checked the manual and sure ‘nuf. I don’t think this was my problem but beware of this maintanence issue.

Thanks for the heads up. Which model Delta portable or stationary?
Mine was the 13" 2 speed "finishing" planer. I think the "portable" term is applied to the 12" and the 12 1/2", although the one I had was what I consider a portable.
They're both portable, aka bench-top, planers. Thanks for posting the positive info! Let us know how you like the DeWalt.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Replace the brushes every 50 hours. Right. Like that is so going to happen. Not.
I wouldn't touch a tool until it broke or was out of alignment.

Boris
