Hi,
I am refinishing a wooden high chair for our son, and wanted some advice about finish options. I have used a product in the past called “Tried and True” wood finish, which is a non-toxic blend of beeswax and polymerized linseed oil, to quote their label. This is a rub-on finish that has given me very pleasing results on the projects where I’ve used it. It’s also nice because the vapors don’t give you a headache when you are applying it.
I thought this would be a good choice for the high chair, but I am worried that it won’t hold up to repeated spillings of slobbery mushed peas etc., and the ensuing clean up with wet sponge. On the positive side, my son can apparently ingest moderate quantities of the high chair with no ill effects, according to the label.
Does anyone have any recommendations on whether this would be a good application for the linseed/beeswax finish, or should I go with something else? And if something else, then what? Polyurethane?
Thanks

The joys of parent hood. I took my 16 month old get his first stitches last night, 6 in total. It was a hard thing to sit through but he was a real trooper and dealt with it very well.
As for your highchair I went plastic after watching my niece destroy her wooden highchair. I would look at a finish that will leave a smooth and very durable surface. With the heavy daily use and scrubbings it will take I would use a durable polyurethane. Check out the link below for one a few choices.

Use a wipe on poly--many coats.
