I don't remember seeing anything in FWW about making wood hinges. I picked up a book at my local library that showed me how to make them. Don't remember the title, next time I'm up there I'll try to remember to look for it again.
I think Rockler sells a jig to help you make them. Might check that out as well. I make all of mine on my WoodRat. They turn out perfect. The 'Rat is a great machine.

I'm not familiar with the FWW article. You might try one of these:
http://www.dewalt.com/us/articles/article.asp?Site=woodworking&ID=3
http://www.woodcraft.com/articles.aspx?articleid=613

Good luck!
http://www.bealltool.com/ used to have info on wooden hingemaking in their catalog. I didn't see it online. Call them. They are very helpful.
