wooden mechanical steering for a car driveable by a kid
Hello all,
I have in mind building a toy car a 5 to 6 year old kid can use with steering strong enough to withstand kid abuse. I have ideas as to how to build the mechanism, but know that in building linkages or other complex wooden projects one learns from experience. So I ask has anyone put together such a steering mechanism or do you know of plans for steering. I am looking for simple drawings with a discussion as to how the mechanism was strengthened or how it was improved. I do have many strong woods including lignum vitae and all the normally available woods, maple, walnut, cherry, teak, epi…… I hope someone can shorten my learning process and keep such a car safe. I would imagine the car would be about 48″ long with steerable purchased wheels with bearings. The rest would likely be wood or wood and cables, possibly built with strips like a kayak to create a smooth surface. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

I have never built such a car, but I'd be tempted to laminate the parts subject to high stress with fiberglass, or even carbon fiber if you want to go high-tech.
