An artist from Kentucky did this carving in wood and covered it with bone. His name is Frank House, brother to Hershel House a well known kentucky longrifle builder. Frank has some skills. You can google around and find the full story if this catches your eye.
Its not far fetched — it is wood.

Hey Dan, I would rather have a link than that thumbnail, K
Thanks, Dan, that's really cool. Off to do a quick Google search, which is amazingly easy to do!
Well, Dan, it might be helpful after all if you'd post a link or two. Unfortunately, "Frank House" or even Sculpture "Frank House" -Anne brings up lots of Anne Frank listings, her house being a national monument, and only one that I noticed which was obviously about your guy. Can you help us out here?
For an adventure and the answer to your search you can do either:
google Contemporary Longrifles Association
http://www.longrifle.ws
Now, don't turn me off as some militia gun crazed crusader. Go on in there and explore all of the hand work being done. While you are looking up Frank, check out the work his wife has been doing.
Good Luck and check back if you're still stuck

I saw his profile at CLA web site (and showed the site to my husband, who is somewhat of a collector) but I was hoping to find some more of his woodwork, bigger pictures than the thumbnail, etc.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Don't want to sell Frank short but ... he's a country boy out there in the hills of Kentucky. I don't think he keeps a digital camera in his pocket like yours truly. I'll look around a bit, he's buried in the internet in some teaching spots.
"You can google around and find the full story if this catches your eye." (from your first post). I had no luck finding "the full story". Had only one Google hit on him, at the Longrifle Association page, didn't even have the thumbnail you posted. You seem very captivated by this man, and I did have some passing interest in learning more about him, but without a link or two from you, seems like a futile endeavor. Is it so difficult for you to post a link? Do you need how-to instructions? Glad to oblige.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

Is it so difficult for you to post a link? No there is none now.
Do you need how-to instructions? No. I think you'll find links posted by me in the past.
The News: The site that I found pictures of the project is gone. The only venue I am aware of seeing more on the subject is Gordon Barlows newest book on contemporary builders and artists. Sorry the news isn't brighter- seems like the ivory and bone police got active.

Dan,
I Googled "kentucky longrifle frank house" and got several hits. It's Frank & Lally House, right? Also got several on Herschel too.
Also, http://www.longrifle.ws/artisans/artisanlist.asp . Hey, how come you're not listed!? I think you should be.
Let me borrow one o them longrifles and I'll go down there and talk to 'em.

Frank and Lally have gone off the radar screen. Several months back there were sites covered with photos of his work and her stuff. Frank "cleaned house" during the filming of the Patriot. Many of his pieces were used in the filming.
His older brother Hershel has been around since Foxfire 5(1972) as a known artist/craftsman. You can find that book on amazon for pennies. Public libraries get it quite easily. You would really love that one.
Check over in American Pioneer Videos. There might be something that will catch your eye.
Chuck Dixon's Fair every last weekend in July down in Penn. is on the internet-- take a look.
CLA: time and money. Had some money the past 4 years from working the "late shift" --it went to McGill.
I'm squirreling some of these worthless dollars away to get back up to the Granite State next summer. Got to get my membership straight with CLA and NMLRA.
