Mr. Conover,
What woods are can be used for food and drink? What is a safe finish that can be applied?
A friend wanted me to make a wine chalice that could be used on a regular basis. He would prefer a dark colored wood. Is olive wood an appropriate choice?
Thank You

My pick would be olive or boxwood. The latter was used extensively by English turners for such objects. The only two safe finishes I know of are Bahlen's Salad Finish and Shellac. I am not a finishing expert but I think Salad Bowl Finish is a completely natural varnish that is food safe once the vehicle has evaporated. I used it extensively for time many years ago but found it failed in about three years requiring refinishing. Shellac is safe and quick for refinishing and hold drink for the odd hour or so but would not hold up well with prolonged exposure to liquid. No finish at all is an option and probably what most of the Treen turners did.
With best regards,
