I am looking at the Woodtek Contractor’s saw and the Grizzly Contractor’s saw. Both cost in the $500 range and I am wondering if anyone has experience with either or both of them and could tell me which one is a better machine. I am a “weekend warrior” and hope to find a saw that will serve as a reasonably priced hobbyist model. I am currently using a benchtop Skilsaw so both of these look like a major upgrade.
Thanks

I think Grizzly makes a Contractor's saw with a 2HP motor, which would obviously be an advantage over the Woodtek. A 1.5 HP motor is underpowered, IMHO, for serious woodworking. You can upgrade accessories gradually, but the motor represents about 1/3 to 1/2 of the total value of the saw. A lot of the Taiwanese manufacturers use the same castings and parts and sell to various companies, who simply paint them their trademark color and slap a label on them. Any of these companies could offer, for example, a great tablesaw and a crappy drillpress with the same logo. It depends on the factory that produced it. I have only one experience with Woodtek. I bought a benchtop mortiser, and was very disappointed in the function and fit and finish. Grizzly carries an identical mortiser with a different paint job. I've seen other posts, however, praising Woodtek and Grizzly, so go figure. Check out the 2HP Grizzly.
