This is a good forum in Australia. Post your request on there and they will help you out.

Thanks
Have done!

Hi Malcolm,
I've sent you an email
Sturt School of Wood and galleries are in the middle of the Southern Highlands
Bungendore has an excellent gallery.
Cheers,
eddie
Join me for a beer and talk about rugby when you are in Canberra?
Dave
Hey, thanks Dave.
If you've got the time, I will have. This is strictly a holiday, and we're in Canberra because the youngest is there on an ANU Summer Scholarship (working on the law of anti-terrorism, how hot is that ... she sat in the Parliament the day Australia's new legislation was enacted a couple of weeks ago) - she's doing an honours law degree at Otago University.
Do you mind emailing off-line? Go to the web site for a link.
Cheers

Another thought: What can you tell me about suppliers in the Canberra area? Timber, veneer, tools and machinery?
For some time I've been trying to track down a supplier of an ebony or rosewood substitute (neither legally tradeable internationally it seems).
Malcolmhttp://www.macpherson.co.nz
Hi Malcolm,
My local supplier carries rosewood - an old stump that was resawn.
You've got my email - shoot me a line if you want.
Cheers,
eddie
Hi Malcolm,
The Sturt School for Wood is definately a must, but they usually start the new year on the Monday of the long weekend. Ask to speak to Tom Harrington (61 248602090) the course director. And yes, Bungendore Woodworks should also be a priority.....It's just outside of Canberra on the way to Sturt at Mittagong. Enjoy!!
Roy
Thanks for all that guys!
I found the Bungendore gallery in a web search, but had forgotten about Sturt. I'll follow up both whan I get home later today (responding from work!).
Will have a couple of days in Canberra, including Australia Day, and 3 days or so pottering around in the Southern Highlands - a week in all. Been there before, but with the kids last time, and their sights were set on Sydney!
For travel purposes (a hint for any North Americans reading this) Australia and New Zealand are now pretty much one market. It's costing me and the old lady less to fly to sydney and hire a car for a week, than it would to fly to Auckland! And it's cheap.
Malcolm
When you get back, tell us how they manage to work upside down - lol.
Merry Xmas to all the folks from "down under". I've always thought it would be neat to wear some shorts, a tank top, and flip flops on Xmas Day.
> When you get back, tell us how they manage to work upside down <
Here in NZ, we're even more upside-down than the Aussies!
Today is the solstice, BTW, and last night it didn't get dark here until nearly 10pm. We BBQd our dinner, sitting outside in the mid 20s Celcius, complaining about the seasonal propensity for thermally-driven thunderstorms. The cherry growers hate the rain. We had a couple of 10kg boxes of black cherries delivered to our tea room at work this morning by a satisfied customer. Very nice - almost too sweet, crunchy, each cherry a whole mouthful ... ah, Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere!

My sympathies - Last night it was still 36 at dusk with big black thunder clouds coming in from the west - I toasted them with a tinny or two on the veranda because the air con was struggling it's guts out inside. Enjoy your trip to Canberra & environs.
Don
Malcolm -
That same solstice caused it to be dark here by 5:00 pm and pouring rain didn't help make it better. Reading this thread makes me glad that the founding fathers signed off on the Declaration of Independence in July instead of one of the winter months. If they had signed it on February 4th, we would probably still be an English colony.
Hi Dave,
"neat to wear some shorts, a tank top, and flip flops on Xmas day"
Even better when they're shorts, singlets and thongs, as we know them here, but there's nothing stopping you if you want to.
Cheers,
eddie
The trouble starts when we work the same way up as you guys - up 'til then things are pretty good.
That's a bit too formal - ditch the thongs, the singlet just stuffs up the tan & well I suppose that because my dear old ma-in-law is fronting for lunch I'd better keep the shorts on.
Thanks for the wishes Dave & a very merry & safe one to you & your family.
Don
Downunder -
Ain't never gonna be a thong on this child. That brings up mental pictures better left buried - if you get my drift.
There's a TV show here called "What Not To Wear" and my kids swear that the producers chould save production costs by just filming my closet. Well, actually, the tiny part of it that I'm allowed to use - lol.
I was in Australia a few times...
What's worth checking out - wood, woodworkers, toolmakers ... ?
I'd say the WOMEN!

Amen to that, brother. That's where I got mine. :)My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
