woodworking attractions in Philadelphia?
I’m going to Philadelphia towards the end of July and wonder if there are any museums, historic sites pertaining to woodworking or the
use of hand tools etc. I did a search on the web but didn’t find much.

http://www.winterthur.org has one of the finest antique furniture collections (and gardens) in the US, about 1 hr. from Phila, PA, in a suburn of Wilmington, Delaware. About 30 mins. north is http://www.longwoodgardens.org one of the finest botanical gardens in the US (Kennett Square, PA).
the wharton esherick home in Paoli is a must see: http://www.levins.com/esherick.html. The Phila Museum of Art http://www.philamuseum.org has some fine pieces of furniture throughout all their galleries representing the far east, europe, and a spectacular collection of american work, shaker and period. Try the galleries in old city for arts and crafts, Nakashima, and art deco. For period pieces go to Pine St. The http://www.woodturningcenter.org is in old city. If you are heading out to Longwood and winterthur (a must) a stop at http://www.brandywinerivermuseum.org is a quick visit- mostly Wyeths but currently featuring an exhibit of children's windsor chairs. Also http://www.hearnehardwoods.com will be right down the road in Oxford. Enjoy!
