I live in LA (Lower Alabama). I have been away from the woodworking magazines for about 20 Years. What are the better woodworking shows? When do they come to my area? I googled WW shows and didn’t get any info. Any show along the Gulf Coast (New Orleans to Pensacola, FL).

Good luck. Write me if you find anything in the area. I'm in Arkansas. [email protected]

I've attended The Woodworking Show in Columbus OH (as well as worked a few around the country) for the past fifteen years... They were really good until up to two years ago...now when I go, the floor space is 1/4 empty and Dewalt/Porter Cable/Delta take up 1/2 the floor pace when they partner up with Woodcraft. You can still find some good deals on accessories and such but the shows aren't what they used to be.
I have heard from vendors (since I work in the tool industry) that the organizers of the show have raised their rates for booth space so high that it's not economically feasible for small vendors to participate and walk away with a profit. So, they decided to no longer attend....It's a shame because you use to be able to go to those shows and see new innovative product that was cutting edge but now it's like walking into a Lowe's tool sale with 10% off.
Greg,
No shows down here. Atlanta, IWFS is every other yr and close as you get. It's geared toward industry and not the hobbiest. They do have a show in Orlando/Kissimmee area.

I'm down in the Florida Panahandle (near Panama City) and the closest I have found is the Woodworking Show in Atlanta usually about 3rd weekend of January. Didn't go last year but did go the previous 4 or 5 years. To be honest all these shows have taken a beating in recent years. People go look at stuff then rush home to buy off the 'net to save money. Internet is wonderful but has ruined a lot of shows in all kinds of areas.
I usually spend a fair amount of money on odd and ends but have made some good deals on show specials from several Atlanta based tool dealers like Redmon & sons. If you go to Atlanta you can actually stop by several of these dealers and get as good of a deal as you will at a show, then while in Alanta stop by Rockler, Highland Hardware, and Woodcraft. Also several wood dealers in Atlanta. Go to Atlanta about any time and you can see all you will see at a show without the high pressure sales folks, just do your homework ahead of time and invest in a good map.
What time of year do they have shows in the Orlando area? I go down there once a year and my trip might just coincide.

I believe they're around the first of Dec. Here's the web site for the show I'm thinking of. http://www.floridawoodexpo.com/fl/
Furniture...the Art of a FurnitureMaker
Thanks, I should have let you know that we go through there in the latter part of February. The only communication I have in the woodworking field is by this forum, and catalogues.
If you're into exotic woods and/or turning look up Amazon Exotic Hardwoods, just north of Orlando in Casselberry. He has lots of turning woods and quite a bit of exotic timber. EarlFurniture...the Art of a FurnitureMaker
Well, I haven't gotten into the plain hardwoods or even softwoods much yet but it sounds interesting. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks.

Cincinnati,
There was a woodworking show at the Pontchartrain center in Kenner, LA (outside N.O - by the airport) every year, but I'm not sure if they have had it since Katrina.
Lee ( in SM - southern Mississippi)
Morning Cincinnati...
We have a show here in Atlanta every January as Earl mentioned. Then there is the "big boy" of all shows (International Wood Fair.. IWF) every other year.
Worth mentioning... there are seminars featuring noted craftsman about every other week at Highland Woodworking (formerly Highland Hardware) and at least once a month at Redmond and Son Machinery here in Atlanta also. The Redmond & Son seminars are a large % for turning on the lathe, though.

I'm not sure as I am certainly no web guru. A Google on Atlanta WW Show turned up nothing. The show is done as part of a circuit by one of the Wood mags and I can't recall which one at the moment.
The circuit travels to several large cities, so maybe someone from one of those that it visits can name it. If so.. you could go to their web-site and e-mail them for a show schedule for 2008. Around that time, several of the mags will run adds and for those of us registered before, we will get info in the mail.
I suggest you "stand by" till late Dec. and post the question here if you don't see ads for it in one of the Wood mags. I doubt there is a dedicated web-site for that group of shows as all details would not be set in place till several months before the actual events. Just a guess on my part!
