I had hoped to buy two Record 5 1/2 vises. One as an end vise the other as a side vise. They are now out of business. Could you recommend any vises of simiular size and quality?

Hi Sierramtns,
Sorry not to reply more quickly to your question. John White told me that he's not super familiar with metal vises and didn't know how best to advise you. I'll poke around tomorrow and see if I can find any good references in our archives.
Does anyone out there, perusing Ask the Experts, have advice to share with Sierramtns?
Thanks,
Gina

Thanks for the reply. Currently I am looking at both the Jorgensen #41012 and Wil<!----><!----><!---->lton<!----><!----> 63246 79C. Mainly because I have seen them mentioned several times in forums. Also they both are available at Amazon.com with free shipping. However I have no idea as to their quality or if there are other better alternatives. I am think of buying two. One for an end vise and the other for a front vise. I will build the work bench myself.
Hi Sierramtns:
Here are three articles from our archive on vises in general.

I'll also try dropping a line to one of our contributors to see if they have feedback on the Jorgensen #41012 and Wil<!----><!----><!---->lton<!----><!----> 63246 79C.
Thanks,

Gina - Thanks for the articles.Very interesting. I will not try the Patternmaker type vise. Looks like more than I need, and perhaps complicated to mount.
Hi Sierramtns,
In case you're interested, I emailed Garrett Hack to see if he had any input on the two specific vises you mention. Here's his response:
"I am not sure about those vises, but the idea he has is sound. I have seen Chinese knockoffs of the old Record that seemed even beefier and good. I would start searching the net, networking with others that know or have bought similar vises recently, and check with sources such as Toolsforworkingwood.com and Thebestthings.com.That's about all the help I can be. I haven't been in the market for any vises, but I know they are out there."
Good luck with it all. And in case you need extra information, most of our content on vises lives in the tool guide section on "clamping." Click on this link and you'll find the first of three pages on the topic: http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/ToolGuide/ToolGuideBrowseResults.aspx?dir=Clamps
