I've heard this pronounced several ways, but the best reference I have says the word is of Burmese origin and is pronounced with a soft "a" in the the first syllable like "banana" and a sharp "ou" sound as in the word "loud" in the second syllable.
It is also commonly spelled padouk, with an "o" instead of an "a" in the second syllable, but the pronunciation stays the same.
The wood has numerous other names throughout Africa, plus several other names in commercial use, and five different names in French.
