Workbench magazine has a good review of sliding compound miter saws this month. I really like the Virtues/Vices/Verdict format they use to summarize their take on each saw.
Same format can be applied to Workbench strangely enough. After quickly glancing through the SCMS review, I jetted to their web site to try out the new Shop Design program on-line. What a bust! Maybe I’ve had too much Mike’s Hard Lemonade tonight, but I can’t find an icon for a bandsaw. Also can’t figure out how to add more than one of any given tool or other object. One countertop, no more. One workbench, no more. One lumber rack, no more. Guess we’re supposed to be operating under the austerity plan!
If you want to check it out, click here. [Oh, they also have a pretty decent plan for a downdraft sanding table.]

I prefer the Lime Mike's. The lemonade taste too much like the powdered mix stuff. Though if you mix 'em with a cranberry one, it's not half bad. Just means you have to drink twice as much.

I'm usually "good" and drink Mike's Lite, but the 6-pack left over from the Northwest Knots Fest was the regular stuff. Haven't tried the cranberry yet.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)

I personally like workbench. Its one of the few magazines I subscribe to. Its also one of the few magazines that I have actually built a project out of useing their plans.
Ive saved most of them as they do have plenty of good info. They had one on a small shed which Im gonna make soon and some plans for a fence which Im gonna use to make a custom gate for my home.
But like all magazines there is give a take. Some issues are good some are not. But like I said I get a few magazines and been through a lot of them even the more what some woodworking snobs consider classier ones. But all in all it is a good mag.

I like WB too, pick up a copy when it has a specific artcle or plan I'm interested in. I was just "surprised" at how insufficient that on-line shop design program is!
I don't know the magazine well enough to know if the Virtues/Vices format is their standard for tool reviews, but I really do like the format.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
they all have thewir short comings. but If I build something from one then I rate it pretty high. I mean out of all the mags you get dealing with w/wing how many prrojects/ tips do you really use.. Me not many..
I found another one that had a good tip or two in it...Router mag or something lime that. i picked it up at blowes.... its pretty good

have you tried the shop layout program on the Grizzly site? I noticed it but have not yet tried it.
1 - measure the board twice
2 - cut it once
3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go
4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
I want you to know your post cost me $7.95.....................I linked up, and was wandering around, and stumbled upon this wheeled gismo for moving plywood sheets around -- something that could be adapted for a situation I have. I thought they were devilishly clever in making the pics big enough to see -- but not so big that you could easily figure out how they did it. so I studied the little pics for a couple of minutes and figured it would take me an hour to draw something out that was buildable. Or, I could spring for the $7.95 and have a .pdf file on my desktop in about 2 minutes, most of which was given over to filling out the form. So thanks a lot. You should write to Peshke and ask for a sales commission..........Never did get to the shop layout thing.............********************************************************

"devilishly clever" -- well put! Too funny.
Let's see, 10% of $7.95... a grande low-fat mocha costs about $3.50... 4 or 5 more sales and I get a treat!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Hi Rick, yep, I've done two different layouts at Grizzly incorporating the new dust collector. It's an excellent program, IMHO. You can change the dimensions of the different machines, counters, columns, cabinets, etc. You can move the walls after they're set too. They even have windows and doors. Pretty complete, especially for a free-use program!
All of the tool icons relate to specific Grizzly tools, of course, but that's no biggie. Only gripe I had was there was nothing for a miter saw, LOL! I took a sink that was about the same dimensions as my saw on it's stand and stuck that in, resized it, and voila!
TIP: The layout is saved on Grizzly's server, but if you want a picture of it saved on your computer, use Print Screen and then open Paint or a graphics/photo program and paste it. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
