Help me… my mind has turned to mush. I probably read 4 or 5 woodworking magazines a month and I can’t remember where I saw the plans. Someone, somewhere published plans for constructing a workbench made of laminated pieces of 3/4″ plywood. Mortices were made by leaving gaps in the laminated layers. Can anyone point me to this article??
Thanks in advance….

SawdustSteve,
This plan can be found in the 2008 "Workshop Solutions" issue of Fine Woodworking on page 60. The article is titled "Rock-Solid Plywood Bench" by Cecil Braeden.
The same text and plans can also be found starting on page 44 of the book title "Shop Improvements: Great Designs from Fine Woodworking" available from Taunton Press. Taunton Product #070928 ISBN 978-1-56158-891-6
I have a copy of both publications in front of me and they are both full of great ideas and plans, I would recommend either one equally.
Thanks for the information on the workbench. I've been rebuilding my shop in my one car garage and my wife is taking over my basement shop for her stained glass work. I just don't need, or want to spend lots of time re-inventing the proverbial wheel. If I remember correctly, the bench can be easily modified to fit individual work areas. Again, THANKS SawdustSteve
I built this very bench about a month ago. What a great bench! Talk about rock solid, I can't get the thing to budge. The author uses screws through the tenon for added strength, but due to the stoutness, I omitted this step. A great bench, and very reasonably priced. Good luck.

I'm building a similar bench right now. Here are some observations: Make a jig to keep the laminations aligned when gluing. Use a cut off paint brush to sperad the glue. You WILL need the whole quart of glue. I didn't screw mine toget her, I glued the motrise & tenon Joints,
Good luck!!

Sawdust Steve,
That bench originally appeared in FWW #181, with dimensioned drawings and drawings of the joinery details. There is also a description of how to make and assemble the bench. If you don't have that issue, you can get a copy of the article online. Just search for Braeden. If you don't have an online membership, you can use the 14 day free trial.
Good luck, Matt

There is also a workbench plan using 4x4s and bolted tension bolts in the new Getting Started in Woodworking series. The .pdf plans are online: http://images.taunton.com/downloads/GSIW_workbench.pdf and the guys in the video series do a nice job of explaining the process.
