G’day,
I have a few older planes that I use regularly, like a #3 and a knuckle joint block plane, both with Sweetheart irons. What I would like to do is to put these original irons aside and put in some ‘workers’.
I’m definately not a collector, but it seems a shame to simply wear these icons out if there is a simple alternative. does anyone know where I might purchase some replacements? (I’m also not in the tune it to the limts with Hock – or similar- irons and chip breaker brigade)

HI Dave,
I might have a few lying around - I'll do a Fatty Vaughtin and: "get back to you shortly," probably mid next week.
Your local tool supplier should be able to order them in, providing that they're not too obscure (the block plane)

Thanks Eddie,
Those chaps at stanley could have done a much better design job if they had produced, say, two blanks. One with a long slot for benc planes and one with milld slots for the specialty stuff like block and rebate planes, then we could just buy a blank and trim to fit.
Silly me.
Dave (go Queenslander, except they are pathetic at union)
Lie-Nielsen makes replacement blades for many older planes:

John,
Thanks for that - looks like a good source for a couple of irons.

"I'm also not in the tune it to the limts ...." Dave, could you translate that please?
FG,
I tripped over that one also. I think it would be clearer if it read:
"In addition, I am not a member of the tune it to the limit with a Hock or LN Iron brigade."
Meaning that he isn't after perfection, just a good user.

Ahhhhh, thank you. My brain was tied in knots over that one.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Jamie,
Absolutely right about the Hock irons etc. I have this view that Stanley made pretty good tools for many years. Some notable exceptions and some I just never understood. So my planes are workers, all bar two were second-hand and regularly used in their first life. Its just that it seems such a shame to wear out the original irons if there is a cost effective alternative.
