just obtained a maple tree trunk root ball from a neighbor It is about 4 feet in diameter. I thought that the wood might be interesting. What is the best way to cut into this giant and what might I expect as result? Can I make solid Butcher blocks from it?

Full of dirt and will burn in a BLAST furnace if the Temp. up a bit!
I harvested a walnut stump like your maple. When I cut into it I found that the roots had completely surrounded pieces of stone and it was difficult to cut pieces out without messing up the chain saw. If you work carefully I think that you can get some nice turning blanks or some nicely figured panels. Just watch out for those rocks.

Thanks for the tip. I'll keep an eye out. Not put one out.
