Hi I am hoping to make some chairs with backs utilising woven cane bought in sheet form.
any suggestions about fixing the edges to the rails would be most welcome. There must be a “standard” method of construction ? Like fitting the cane in a groove or something but hows it fixed?.

There are a number of books on the subject like the one above (haven't seen it personally) and of course searching for caning supplies will give you more leads. According to my Fine Woodworking Index Issues 1-100, Issue 90 has a couple pages on books about caning and issue 20 described the method for caning with 22, 23 & 25 having a bit more. you'll need to search the site for more recent info.
There is a "standard" way to make a seat with cane sheets. You do cut a groove around the opening, the size determined by the materials used. The cane is laid over the seat after being soaked in water to soften, and wedges are used to force the cane into the groove. Then a wedge profiled strip of cane is tapped into the groove with a mallet but not fully seated, as the wedges are withdrawn. The excess is trimmed of with a sharp knife and then the strip is driven home. When the cane dries it tightens up the rest of the way. There will be stiff "hairs" that poke you when seated and they can be removed by carefully fanning a torch over the seat to burn them off.
My description is from memory of when I helped out in my father's repair shop 30 years ago so you'll have to forgive me if it's not more concise.
Welcome to the forum too!
Hi QC ; thank you for the help I have ordered the book. and thanks for the welcome.

Hi bergerac ,
The standard method for the chair back application you describe would be a groove the cane goes into and a spline mold to finish it off .
The spline is slightly crowned on the top side , when done properly the crown begins at the surface of the back , it's tapped in just until it crowns .
The spline comes in different widths from like an 1/8" and up .
1/4" wide X 3/8" or more in depth being imo the most common groove size .
If your frame has square corners in the groove then you miter the spline , if the corners are rounded you may bend the spline around , and seam on a 45° on the bottom of the backs . Don't design too tight of a corner radius .
Depending on your area there are probably a few cane supply houses within mailing distance . You will get a chart that tells you which size spline goes with the groove width .
hope this helps give some direction
