I am enthralled by the island workshop Alan DeVilbiss built. (FW #181) I think it’s a brilliant design. I will be building a new workshop within the next year and I would like to replicate it. I have some questions as I don’t have the same equipment and will need to modify. I don’t know how to get in touch with Alan but perhaps some out there can direct my questions to him. What is the clearance between the walls and the island? What do you recommend as the minimum? I have a “poor man’s (woman’s) cyclone, i.e. a 45 gallon drum and a cyclone lid attached to a 2hp General dust collector. Can this be adapted to your central dust collection system? I presently have my tablesaw, jointer and planer in a fairly tight triangle as I use them in sequence when preparing wood. I note that you have placed the planer at the other end of the island. Could it be placed opposite the router table with the feed going toward the routertable/saw? The way the band saw is mounted in the island would make it awkward for me as a right hander to use it in the middle of the island. Could it be mounted at the end (say where you have the planer). Finally, although I have a RAS, I don’t use it much as I find it very fiddley to adjust. Could I adapt a miter saw? Thanks in advance for your assistance. TL
