There is finally some real estate on the planet that might be the spot for a shop of my own. After paying the Department of Treasury this past Monday, I think I can afford a book on workshop design and layout. (It’s a start !)
What publication would you recommend?
TIA

I like "Setting up Shop" by Nagyszalanczy, published by our hosts. 'lots of good, practical info.
"The Workshop Book" by Landis is also a good read, if not quite as good a source of guidance in setting up your own.
"Working at Woodworking" by Toplin also has some interesting points to make.
A lot of your shop layout depends on what tools you have, what you expect to get, and ends with personal preference.
If you are looking for a good book, I usually go to a place like Borders Books & Music or a large chain that has a coffee shop where you can read their book. There are usually more books available than money to buy them. This gives you time to compare books and see which one has what you want (the coffee is good too). It keeps me from buying on an impulse and helps me decide which ones I can't live without.
If you have a Woodcraft near you, they usually carry a good selection of books with a seating area to look at them.
If you're looking for storage ideas, bench designs, etc... I usually look at the background in woodworking magazine pictures to see what other people do and use. You may find some good ideas behind the focus of the camera.
"SETTING UP SHOP" BY NAGYSZALANCY is well worth the money.
