Need help! I have been doing woodwork ( cabinets, beds, various projects for family members) for the past 20 years, anytime I was able to find a few hours free. Now I am retired and would like very much to learn woodturning. I have two lathes ( gifts from patients), a 36″ Delta and a small Jet. which have been sitting in my shop for years unused. I could learn by reading books and by trial and error, however the learning process would be much faster if some good samaritan in Western Maryland would teach the basics. I know I could attend a formal course at a woodturning school but for family reasons I cannot be away for more than a day or so. Any help or suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks

Johncabot,
Our local Woodcraft has classes ranging from a few hours to all day for several consecutive days...but your home every night. Do you have local Woodcraft?
I took classes at my local woodcraft store. Tuesday nights, 3 hours per class, 6 weeks or so. Approx $250 for all classes. It was the best thing I could have done to get started without hurting myself. The lathe is very enjoyable but dangerous if you are not told about basis safety techniques.
The class was a great primer on all the popular turning methods - spindles, bowls, hollow vessels, ornaments, etc.
Also learned sharpening and finishing.
Definitely would recommend.
