Wrap around floating bench in a breakfast nook
Hello,
I am looking for some advice regarding a wrap around sitting bench in a kitchen breakfast nook. I’m looking to make a simple, clean and contempory look. With a “floating” type bench. Not your usual storage under the bench type “breakfast nook”
I have been looking at a lot of “L” brackets, wall mounted types. Does anybody have any expierence with these? Will they support the wieght of a bench and the use of sitting and dining? Will they still hold with the drywall inbetween the bracket and the studs. I would plan on using a 3 1/2 lag bolt through the bracket into the studs.
The kitchen has a lot of stainless steel, so the metal framing of the floating bench would look great with a maple top.
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Another thought- bore a hole in the studs to receive a tight fitting piece of 3/4 inch gas pipe. Bore so that the pipe emerges as horizontally level as possible. Bore identical holes into your bench bottom and slip it on over the pipe. Then drill set screw holes in from underneath to engage the pipe. You get the floating look with no hardward visible at all, the drywall is not a factor much, and you can wrap this around corners with butt joints.
Torsion box construction with a simple cantilever connection at the wall. Look up Ian Kirby in FWW. He wrote the classic torsion box article that will give you everything you need to know. There are more modern methods but his will work for everyone. This article is mid 80's vintage I believe.
