good evening all,
having enjoyed my first entry to this platform I try again. this time I wonder if anyone has an idea how to install in a frame with a floating panel also a 6mm multiplex board to be glued with leather to serve as a writing desk. the styles from the frame are 21 mm thick, the floating panel is about 11 mm thick. the writing area is on the backside from the floating panel. unfortunately I cannot draw a picture so I hope this will do??????????????

I'm just guessing that this is the door of a drop-front desk that will serve as writing surface when it's open. If so, you probably want the leather surface to be flush with the surrounding frame. Rabbet the edge of your 6mm panel down to about 3mm, and let it share the groove of the frame with your floating solid wood panel on the other side. Finish the back of the wood panel before you assemble. Do not glue the multiplex board, but make it an exact fit without any allowance for expansion and contraction as needed on the wood side. The rabbet will bring the leather surface right up flush with the surrounding frames.

good morning ring,
thanks for your suggestion. you hit the nail quit right. it's indeed a drop front lid. your suggestion is to house both the floating and multiplex board (for gluing the leather on) in the groove from the frame. I will have a try and hope the 6 mm multiplex board can do the job. the area of the writing desk is 30 x 60 c/m.
Fairly small writing area...I don't expect you'll have any problems with it. The 2 different panels can comfortably share the groove;the wood will expand and contract and the multiplex board will remain stable in position. By my loose reakoning, your groove should start around 4mm from the rear side of the frames. A 10mm groove (3mm for the multiplex, 6.5mm for the wood) should leave you with a reasonable 6 or 7mm to the front edge. Dry assemble to check it well before the real assembly.

all clear. I'll check it and will make a try out. thanks again and perhaps I can be of help next time. have a nice day and enjoy your woodworking. the writing desk belongs to a 4 doors chest in "kolonial style" made in european oak.
