Just got back from the mall with my girlfriend and stopped into Yankee Candle for their half-off sale. Bored out of my mind I started smelling the jars and then i thought to myself
“If Yankee Candle marketed candle scents to woodworkers, what would they be?”

Cedar shavings scent??
Black walnut would be my choice.

I agree with you on that one Lee. Black walnut straight form the saw is tops in my book.

Nothing tops the smell of fresh cut oak logs.
I love the smell of laquer in the morning. Smells like....Hickory.

Said least is often said best,
but said best is often said least.
I really love the smell of fresh cut pine. I have done some tree work over the years, and that old pine sap really turns me on.
Joe,
Go to your local hunting supply store. They sell pine scented discs that deer hunters use as cover scents.
I spent a fortune on deodorant until I finally realized that people didn't like me anyway.

What wood working scents?
1) Burning two stroke oil.
2) Ozone.
3) My wood burning stove.
4) Atlantic White Cedar.
Best,
John
I was burning cherry cut-offs yesterday. Gawd, I love that smell. Walnut and hickory, too.
When I came in from the shop yesterday, my wife hugged me, and said I smelled like a Salami. Still haven't figured that one out yet.
Jeff
Isn't salami a hunk of meat
nope, not a hunk of meat. salami comes from the famed salami forests of northern italy. ;)
Isn't that next to The Pepperoni Forest? I got some wild grained pepperoni from there once, but it had a lot of knots.Bob @ Kidderville Acres

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!

"had a lot of knots" Do you mean it was naughty?
Just what I'am working with now, Black Cherry.
How cool would it be to walk into a Woodworking Store and smell freshly cut wood. Kind of like walking into a Bakery or Chocolate store.

MVF, ( this is a tale but you will like the end)I am new to East Tn. and found a wood shop that also mills boards. After buying some 2 1/4" dry cherry 15 "x 10' to get my tail vise faces for my new benches, I said that I was lookin for some heavy stock to build a shave horse(after all I had the Lv plans under my arm for sizing ) , He chuckled and walked me to an other room in his large building(s) and there was his horse. He sat me down and handed me a stick to give her a go. I picked up his mid sized shave and (thank the Lord that I know how to use it) proceded to round it out. He says that it's the third one he's made and this one is right. He said that mass weight makes all the difference and it was the truth.
Two days later my phone rings at 0915 and he says that he had the boys chunk up a log for a horse that I may like. Hah, it was an aromatic cedar 16" x 8' that they flattened top and bottom and then took cuts at 5 1/2", 3" and 2". You know that lovely pinkish red fragarent cedar. The big stick will be the seat, the 3" will more than provide the bridge structures and the 2" will give up the legs, The scrap I will band saw to line my closets. He says that he will look for a 4x6 x 48" stick of black walnut for the dumb head.
The storage is in my shop till I return in Feb. is on boards every 16" but the next morning I went down to the basement shop and the aroma was almost heavenly. I am very sure that there is not a moth alive in that house, not to mention the shop. Every one should experience this at least once. Now I can't wait till I cut up my two old growth hickorys next year, and then the two black walnuts. It's a joy. Paddy

Paddy, thanks for sharing! I have the complete opposite story. I was hired by the company I work for to build a custom cabinetry for them to display their new tools to prospective dealers. I made it out of laminated particleboard and had to use contact cement for the glue. Since my shop was in my basement I built three cabinets that were about 4' long each downstairs. When it came time to glue I opened up the one gallon can and went at it. A few hours later, my girlfriend came home from shopping and went nuts. Said the smell was all over the house and it gave her a massive headache. She was so mad at me she ended up staying at her mothers house for the night. Did I mention I forgot to open up the windows in the basement? oops.....
Creosote, fresh from the wood burner. Ugh
