I am taking a handtools class soon. One of the items that I was told to purchase is yellowstone. What is yellowstone and where can it be purchased?

According to the Parks Department, Yellowstone is not for sale. ;-)
Might they be referring to Nagura stones (available in natural white or synthetic yellow/gold) which are used as part of the final polishing step in sharpening?

Not a nagura stone, Yellowstone refers to a variety of honing compound. If you google Yellowstone honing you will find a number of sources either through stores that cater to carvers or to straight razors.
