John, I like your miter saw stand that appeared in several FWW issues and am planning on building it for my shop. In studying your article I have two questions:
1. What are your thoughts about aligning the saw stand fence with the miter saw fence and not offsetting it by 1/2 inch as you recommend? I think I would prefer to shim any stock that might be crooked.
2. From the pictures included with the article it looks like you set the base cabinet front panel and back panel slightly back from the front and rear edge of the base bottom. However, I don’t see anyplace in the article that describes the setback measurement. Can you provide it?
Thanks,
Bob

Bob,
I much prefer the set back fence. The fence on the machine is more than adequate for positioning the stock, a long fence doesn't improve the accuracy but can certainly diminish it if the stock is curved. It is difficult to shim a piece that curves toward the fence.
The top is 1/2 inch wider than the sides, so I probably split the 1/2 inch equally and left 1/4 inch of overhang.
