The Internet is so not personal, yet many of you have become good “forum” friends over the years. Anyway on my website I have been asked in many many emails what people look like who own the photos and do the woodworking. Most often they want to compliment people for their fine handywork.
So if you have time go to http://woodshopphotos.com and post a photo of yourself. If you include your email, people can then send you their thoughts.

If you've looked at the personal information people choose to post/not post here on Knots, you've doubtless noticed how few photos Knotheads have chosen to post.
That, combined with the fact that you are not known to me, and I have never heard of the website to which you posted a reference, leave me highly unlikely to comply with your request.
Now, if Sarge, Forestgirl, Rob Millard, Richard Jones, Jon Arno, or someone else with whom some of us have developed "relationships" had posted such a request...

Chris, we here at Knots have the option of including a photo in our personal information. Some of us have, I'd venture to guess most of us haven't. We're not likely to post our photo on a web site that we don't frequent on pretty much a daily basis and have some regular personal involvement with. Which leads me to ask, what is your agenda here?
I hate to be suspicious, or worse yet, senile, but your profile indicates you've made 3 posts and have been a member only since November 13th. Am I forgetting you from a different nickname, or are you really that nervy to pop up and ask us for our pics?
"...and post a photo of yourself. If you include your email, people can then send you their thoughts." Uhhhhhhh, no thanks.

I bailed before I got to the part about posting email addresses. I think you just discovered the agenda.
I have a vague memory of some other post inviting us to that web site. Will have to browse back aways and see if I can find it. Sounds like some kind of commercial venture and this is a weak attempt at scaring up some customers. Yep, I found it. He was much more forthright in his original post:http://forums.taunton.com/tp-knots/messages?msg=14699.1

I've visited that sight several times and have enjoyed it each time.
It seems like every time someone posts a message who has posted only a few times previously you guys jump up and accuse them of some shady business. judging by his post I think he means that if you have posted pictures of your work (assuming you even have work to take pictures of) or your shop on his website, maybe you would be interested in becoming more involved, like providing an email address and a face to go with the work.
This is a public forum, so quite jumping on everyone who hasn't posted some ridiculous number of times! If you don't want to post on it, or even take the time to visit it then keep your opinions about it to yourself!

"It seems like every time someone posts a message who has posted only a few times previously you guys jump up and accuse them of some shady business." Oh, c'mon gecko, that's so without foundation, it's not even funny -- or may it is funny, hysterical to be specific.
Please take note of the following:
I warmly welcome newcomers to Knots, with a very, very, very few exceptions, those generally being someone who's obviously a troll, or who is here only to commercialize.
I wasn't the first to raise eyebrows in this thread, and very well might not be the last.
A member who posts for the sole reason of drumming up business for their website, without posting in any other context whatsoever, is simply using Knots for their own free advertising purposes. The site he wants us to connect to is a commercial site. When I went to the URL, my AdAware program blocked at least 3 cookies from Rockler and Amazon.
I probably will enjoy browsing the site also, but still resent this fake "warm and fuzzy" overture from someone who obviously has no desire to contribute to Knots, only to get free marketing exposure here. forestgirl Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>) you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
that's all fine and dandy, but you can simply ignore him rather than condemning him. as I mentioned earlier, knots is a public forum. its not up to you or me to decide who should and shouldn't post here, regardless of reason. I agree you give most people a warm welcome here, but I have seen on several occasion accusations by you that someone is posting here with intent to advertise, or conduct otherwise shady business. I have in the recent past not been visiting knots as often because of situations like this. I just think that if you don't have anything nice to say you shouldn't say anything at all. I will now take my own advice and consider this conversation closed.

I don't have any intentions of hiding my head in the sand when someone comes to this group with inappropriate business. These forums are basically self-moderated, at least that what the official moderators hope for. As a contributory member of the forum, I have every right to say something, and I'm certainly not demanding that anyone stop posting.
There have been countless times in the past when I've come to other members' defense when they've been picked on by folks who just like to badger and be mean, and sustained quite a bit of flak for doing so, I might add. These sweeping generalizations of yours are way off the charts, i.e., "It seems every time someone [does whatever] you guys [do whatever]" and "quite [sic] jumping on everyone who hasn't posted some ridiculous number of times!" Thanks for the heads up FG. It's our choice to follow through and you're just giving us a little more info. When someone sends me an e-mail with some story requesting I send a sick child a card, or some scare story or the one about Dr. Pepper leaving "under God" off their special 9/11 can - I go straight to snopes.com,check it out and if the original was questionable or just an outright lie, I email back to the original sender. I figure if someone doesn't appreciate it they'll either tell me or quit forwarding that stuff to me. Either way, it's their choice! I REALLY APPRECIATE the effort you make at trying to identify "where someone's coming from". We really don't KNOW each other on this forum, as much as we think we might, What happened with ToolDoc proves that, but I appreciate knowing you're concerned about someone besides yourself!

Huh your BACK,gee never knew you Left...
Where did ya go,Build anyting we should know about?
Oh yeah FG,Welcome back..I am just a Woodworker,But I know Nothing..
Being a friend of Forest Girl, I will not defend her stance on the direct advertising on the forum in post. I would not want anyone to think that defense stemmed from just friend-ship alone.
I would point out that she has an excellent track record of helping others and does not pick on anyone. I see no difference in pointing out that someone is directly advertising on a post than I would of pointing out that Platinum Publications is soliciting you to send money and haven't bothered to mention that you won't get FWW if you do. Just a warning to beware. Some sent their money before someone bothered to check it out.
Going to a profile to see someone has only 3 post and two of them is a solicitation by searching post is just putting a tool to use to help establish facts. The fact that the poster has not personally responded to the accusation tells me something. I don't think it has to do with the number of post you have. I have many post and I know for a fact if I posted my web-site at work and asked everyone to come over, she would e-mail me and tell me I was out-of-line. Trust me.. ha.. ha...
The facts are, Rule 3 in Terms of Use states that we cannot personally advertise except in our profile. I have read this and understand it. I post here to have a good time, gain knowledge and exchange knowledge. If you come to my web-site and use it, I would stand to gain from commission personally. I clearly do not want to come here and see bill-boards and fast-food joints lining the corridors. I listen to PBR often for the same reason. I am not looking for a commercial atmosphere. It's everywhere else around me.
We all have our opinions. Regardless if you have posted once or a million times, one is just as important as another. Short post or long post, we all pay the same subscription price. We all have the right to state our opinion and as many times as we like. And it's just that, our opinion.
But, I would prefer to do it without being offered a great deal on siding, personally insulted or having to deal with dual characters that speak with forked tongue. Just like, well... the rules states. If one is allowed to bend the rules, all should be allowed!
Should we be a little suspicious sometimes. My conclussion is "history repeats itself" and "common sense rules". Good idea to look over the log before we step over. Probably nothing there but a quick glance doesn't hurt. ha..ha...
sarge..jt
P.S. gecko.. nice work on the pieces on your web-site. I chose to look at them when I visited your profile. Great advertising and done just like the rules states. Fine job!

Go for it FG I agree wholeheartedly with you. That approach smacks to me of the soft sell, use the friend thing.Thank heaven for the" ignore this author" button
You are absolutely on target here for sure, Forestgirl. The good ol' small community days are gone. One needs to be cautious. Too bad but that is the way it is.
Nothing wrong with posting a pic. anyway that is my view.

Merry Xmas!
Sigh... I gotta get a handle on this cafeine induced bi-polar thing.

I understood forestgirl's post as a simple warning. Nothing more.
Cheers,
Peter
I just found the "ignore posts" button in the profile section, YEAH!
This discussion has really sparked my thinking about where we (the collective WE) cross that commercial line. I make my living from woodworking and struggle to find that balance between being a walking advertisement (read: P.I.T.A.) and not saying enough to let people know what I do to advance the business.
The effect I worry about for this forum is that people will less willing to share their knowledge, humor, and good wishes if they get burned by someone who uses these posts for direct monetary gain. (As opposed to indirect personal gain which is why most of us are here). This is a special forum (I've not found any others with this level of knowledge and a willingness to share it) and I'd hate to see it ruined.
My suggestion is that commercial posters, those with an agenda, identify themselves (this is the post-modern deconstructionist methodology) and their agenda so we can make our choices and move on. Like someone else said, Cris' lack of response to the first words of warning is telling.
Peace,
Norse
I have to agree with what everyone else is after saying above. I have been surfing Knots for years. Hell I was here before FG graced us with her presence.
I don't mind showing pictures of my work but if a picture of need is what you need to be able to talk to me then here is a picture of my right hand. I use it all the time when talking on line.

Scott, I get nothing but a picture of plywood at your site.
The main page is Java so it may not work on some machines depending on your settings. Try http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/renay.frankland/index2.html if you cannot get it to work.Scott C. Frankland
