Has anyone used the ZEM ear guards? This product is mentioned on page 22 of FWW 182. Would like to know how effective they are from people who have actually used a pair.

I got a pair as soon as I saw the ad, and I love them. You can carry on a conversation in normal tones without removing them, but the noise from a table mounted router or a cabinet saw is significantly reduced. ZEM posts the exact specs; in my experience they sure seem to do the job in terms of hearing protection. They are also lightweight, easy on and off, and unobtrusive so they aren't in the way of glasses/ goggles or a respirator/ dust mask. And unlike foam plugs, you don't get them all filthy rolling them in your fingers to get them in your ears. All in all, I highly recommend them. Only drawback, very small, if you wear them so they lie back behind your head against your collar, the sound of them rubbing on the collar echoes in your ear. So they pretty much need to be on top of my head or below my chin. But as I said, I'm very happy with them.
BTW, ordering from their website was a hassle at the time I tried. You had to have a PayPal account, and I do not. I called and they were very helpful with a phone order. At this point, Lee Valley carries them: http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=53610&cat=1,42207
You could order from there if you find their website, referenced in the FWW article, is trouble.
Thanks for your input. I will order a pair from Lee Valley as they are great place to buy. I do not like e-bay and will not utilize their services.
I love mine. Picked them up at Lee Valley just after they started to carry them. By far the best hearing protection in my shop. Easy to put on and take off, very lightwieght, comfortable, and they don't get in the way off my safety glasses. They work much better than the ear-muff type that's for sure.
Thanks for your input. See my reply to Anon.
