How to Tune Up a Block Plane
Learn how to restore a block plane to peak performance, with tips on flattening the sole, honing, and final setup.
A block plane is perhaps one of the most valuable tools in any workshop. Whether you’re a hand tool aficionado or a power tool junkie, the humble block plane can tackle a variety of jobs—from chamfering and easing edges, to end grain, and more.
Newly purchased block planes rarely require much in the way of a tune-up—sharpening and throat adjustment are likely all that will be required. If you’ve recently ponied up a few bucks for a vintage block plane however, a complete overhaul may be required. In this short video, Fine Woodworking executive art director Michael Pekovich demonstrates how to tune up a vintage block plane from start to finish, with tips on sole flattening, honing, final setup, and more.
