Segmented Bowl
As a segmented turner, I wanted to give the impression of a ripened “seed pod” about to burst its seams. The body of the seed pod is fiddleback maple with black veneer made with compound stave construction. The “bursting seam” is zebrawood. The lid is maple burl with an African blackwood finial. The lid sits on a “step” of zebrawood inside the mouth of the seed pod. The inside is as smoothly finished as the exterior. My choice of finish is Russ Fairfield’s “home brew” of Tung Oil, Spar varnish and Naptha. The finish is applied by wet sanding with the “home brew” from 150 grit up through 400, then rubbed with 0000 steel wool and buffed.

For such a young guy, you do very nice work. As you grow older and turn more, you'll find that your talent and skills will improve. Do not be discouraged by your recent turnings but keep turning and observing the continued inrichment of your ability. You are amazing as is 'Old Mustard'. Well done Ray. RE/OLE
Beautiful piece. Very unique form that begs to be looked at.
Very nice piece, Ray. Zebrawood always seems to catch the eye; I use it a lot myself. Keep up the good work!
