Variation of a Ray Allen classic
I started turning about two years ago after coming across Dale Nish’s book “Woodturning with Ray Allen. Since then turning has pretty much become an addiction. This vase is my most recent turning and is a variation of one of Rays classic designs. The vase is 19 1/2″ wide by 15 1/2” tall and is made of curly maple, holly, ebony and pauduk. The piece took approximately 350 hours and is comprised of 2446 pieces with a high gloss tonge oil finish.

Exquisite. Absolutely beautiful. I was inspired by the same book. You are a true master of segmenting.
Unbelievably Complex and beautiful. The color choices are perfect.
Beautiful. I used to consider myself a "half-decent for a beginner turner". After seeing this, and some of the other entries, I think I'll stick with "Expert Sawdust Maker", or "Occasional Decorative Firewood Creator".
I forgot to mention I buy wood from the same store Ray use to buy from. About 16 or so years ago he came in to Woodworkers source here in Tucson with one of his enormous, exquisite turnings. It may have even been the one like this. I had no idea what I was looking at but I was so amazed that I couldn't take my eyes off of it. Back then it was so far beyond my comprehension I couldn't begin to understand what had been done to create it. I'm thankful for that day even though I didn't start segmented turning for another 14+ years. What a blessing his work has been to so many of us. Congratulations on such a wonder work of art.
This is a very beautiful piece, and has earned my vote in the Turners Challenge. This was a tough vote because ALL the entries are so beautiful, and all deserve to win. Great Piece !!!
I'd love to see a picture of what your glue up looked like before you started turning this stunning vase.
I'm lost for words. The thing I can say is TEACH ME!!! Out of this world. You are a master turner. Amazing work, time, and patience.
