Congrats to the winners of our Cure for the Common Cabinet Contest: Mark Laub of Minneapolis, Minn., Bob Abbott of Lake Oswego, Ore., Michael Singer of Felton, Calif., and Craig Hopson of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Community voting ended at midnight Nov. 5 and Laub’s After The Goldrush Lingerie Cabinet came in well ahead of the pack.

Laub’s creative piece is covered with decorative details using materials ranging from abalone and pearl to bubinga and pau amarillo. In addition to stealing the popular vote, it garnered the most comments. “Your work absolutely stands as the benchmark for inspired, creative woodworking,” commented CarlthePotter.

He’ll take home a Bessey Clamp prize package valued at $1039.75. 

Bob Abbott takes second place for his Curved Dresser, an uncommon piece that looks like it’s ready to get up and dance. He built it from curly maple, jatoba, zebra wood, and purpleheart.

FineWoodworking.com members called it a “marvelous example of creativity,” “the essence of fun,” and “fun house mirror furniture.” Abbott will take home a Bessey clamp package valued at $419.97. 

Michael Singer, Craig Thibodeau, and Craig Hopson snagged third, fourth, and fifth places respectively and have each won a K-Body REVO Extender Kit worth $179.99.

Third place
Singer wins for his elegant corner jewelry cabinet. It was designed for a wedding anniversary and features mahogany, maple, cocobolo, ebony, and holly.

Fourth place
Thibodeau’s Blue Ulysses Sideboard features the same Gardenia-flower style that helped him win Best in Show at the 2007 Design in Wood show in San Diego for his Gardenia Sideboard.

Thibodeau said this is his fourth piece of marquetry furniture after studying with Paul Schurch and Patrick Edwards.

Fifth place
Hopson takes fifth place for his Arts and Crafts Bookcases. While restoring his traditional home, he added a gas fireplace and bookcases to give the master bedroom a warm Arts & Crafts feel.
