Eye Candy
I came up with this concept several months back. You see, like most woodworkers, I too had been saving the small cut offs of many types of woods, some even having inlays in them and they reminded me of a bag of Allsorts licorice. They were too small to do anything with, but I kept hording them anyway, knowing something would come to mind. Thats when the candy dish idea started forming. So I made this box from a piece of figured maple and then recut the top into 9 pieces, removed the center section which created a dish for the candy. I then reglued the top with strips of bloodwood sandwiched in between the pieces of maple. I then routed out a lip on the inside perimeter of the box so the lid would set down into it and attached the lid to the sides using brass pins as hinges. I shaped the exterior with an angle grinder, and pad sanders, then finished it it up by hand sanding through varying grits. The candies on the box are both glued directly to the surface and some are mortised into it in places. The divider slides side to side and can be lifted out, the legs are larger than the interior just enough to act like a spring, keeping it in tension.A piece of candy acts as the lift knob. The interior base border is made from overlapping inlayed plugs of various colors. The handle is bloodwood with maple inlay. The finish is gloss lacquer.

This is quite wonderful. Well maybe a few less dots on the sides, but altogether fun. Nice job.
I found this utterly delightful and liberating. Africanchippy and I had been bitching recently about uses for the stuff called "offcuts". My compliments to you.
Very creative Andy you should be very proud a great way to recycle and use every part of nature's beauty, keep up the creative ideas and life will always be a new beginning!
Stikk!!
Great to see you here Andy! Once again...beautiful job on this!
OK Andy, I always love your work, but I'm not real crazy about competing against it. You raise the bar whenever you post your projects. Thanks, Kent Shepherd
This is the best because it makes you want to eat it. It reminds me of my childhood.
My childhood, a time when candy was just so wonderful, like the expression "A kid in the candy store". Great job.
This is like being a kid in the candy store, great job, very artistic
You have given me a bit of inspiration, and some use for my scraps
Thanks
Very creative idea Andy. Very cool.
Congratulations Andy!
That is a yummy design. Congrats and well done.
Absolutely wonderful. A great expression of skill and artistry. Such a inspiring blend of creativity in the materials and tools - the surface treatment of the box is beautiful. somebody really enjoyed themselves
HI Andy. I absolutely Love the box you made. It sure is eye-candy to me. Other than the great colorful contrast in the woods I am very impressed with how you shaped the whole box. Each side is different and skillfully molded. Very nice work.
Regards,
Bill
