A reader called our attention to this story, which was published this summer in a newspaper outside Manchester, in northern England. It’s all about what happens when you combine a passion for woodworking with an impulse toward public service and – apparently – a strong desire to get your work done without being interrupted.
It also reminds me of the good charity work done by woodworking guilds across this country, and what a terrific resource our skills can be for our own communities.
Anybody know of any cool public-service woodworking projects going on out there? How are your skills making your neighborhood a better place to live?

The timing of this post is incredible. Just yesterday, my sister forwarded me an article of a man who makes custom canes for our injured solders. The article states "if you are a wounded vet in need of a cane to forward a note to [email protected]. He will respond requesting information to help determine cane dimensions. He builds and provides the canes at no cost!
What a wonderful gift for our solders in need.
Would like to get one of Brad Gramberg's canes. I am a disabled vet with gunshot wound to right knee which subsequently resulted in hip surgery on my right hip. I have worn out several canes. I will also donate money to help offset costs. What do I need to do?
