Every two weeks, a team of Fine Woodworking editors gather together to “talk shop,” and answer reader questions. You can watch the archived video here or catch Episode 4 as a podcast on iTunes.
Be sure to send your woodworking questions to [email protected], or just click on the image at left. We’ll select the questions for each podcast out of the many that arrive in our in-box every week.
Shop Talk Live: Episode 4
This week, FWW art director Mike Pekovich and senior editor Matt Kenney take the hot seats while editor Asa Christiana skips out, opting to sip on champagne-coolies while on a much-deserved vacation. In this week’s “What are You Working On” segment, Mike and Matt each brought on in a recently finished cabinet project. Click the photo at left for a full-size view.
Matt’s cabinet is built of cherry, with an interesting use of end grain veneer on the drawer fronts. Mike’s, on the other hand, is built from white oak, with some spalted brown oak drawer fronts.

Just wanted to mention how much I'm enjoying Shop Talk Live. Unfortunately, I'm usually teaching when it's broadcast live, but I pick it up when it's available as a podcast and video. You guys are doing great!
Thanks very much, beem!
I really like your new Shop Talk Live. During the 4th edition I especially liked the comparison of the two cabinets. Keep up the good work.
Yeah I gotta say I know you guys are trying to freshen the proceedings on the FWW site and its working!
whiskey3 and redstickslim: Thanks so much for your kind words. There is a great deal of effort put into these biweekly events and it makes our day when folks get a lot of use and fun out the work we put in. Cheers to you both.

Best Shop Talk ever!
Keep 'em coming!
Hi guys - really enjoying the podcasts and getting to see the various approaches to the craft. Good advice from good presenters - thanks!
Enjoy the opportunity to hear guys talk about our "hobby/obsession". I am always interested in the little things in someone else's shop. How about a guided tour of the shop you broadcast from. Attention to the little things like the chisel and ruler holder behind your set,the trough you grab things from (what is it for?),etc. I am always looking for things to provide tool access/storage from people who know a lot more about the craft than I do.
VegasRichard: Thanks for the kind words. It's tough to do a walking tour of the shop, because we have the camera on a tripod, with a great deal of wires all over the place. That said, we might be able to swing around so you can see the machine room (behind camera), and a couple of other tidbits. Can't promise a monster shop tour but we might be able to give a glimpse. I'll see what I can do.
Cheers,
Ed
An idea maybe for the future, a guest woodworker(s)? Sort of like the discussion panel from a few years ago but more 1 on 1. Just throwing it out there. These are really fun to watch and learn from. It's great to different views presented in a talk format. Keep up the great work!
