Easy Three-Part Furniture Finish
Looking for a fast, simple, attractive finish? Try this recipe.
Greg Paolini often finds some of his best woodworking students are driven to sheer frustration when it comes to finishing their pieces. That’s why he came up with his fool-proof 3-2-1 finishing technique, and easy three-part clear finish that goes on quick and provides excellent protection for your furniture.
Here’s the recipe:
3 parts: paint thinner or mineral spirits
2 parts: oil based polyurethane
1 part: oil (boiled linseed oil)
When it comes to applying this clear finish, it couldn’t be easier. Just saturate the wood with finish and sand the mixture into the grain using some fine-grit sandpaper. As the dust is sanded in, it actually fills the grain, allowing for a super-smooth finish. After that, it’s just a matter of thoroughly wiping off the excess finish, allowing it to dry, and repeating the process.

Learned this at Greg’s shop. Easy and no nibs
what grit of sandpaper do you recommend? and as you apply coats to the finish do you go with finer sandpaper?
Took a class many years ago with Russ Filbeck in San Diego. Wet Dry Sandpaper 220, 320, 400. Make a slurry oil coat with each grit. Wipe off excess over week of drying from each grit used. I don't. Go thru entire process and allow to dry for one week or so. Wipe off everyday until dry. Apply wax. Beautiful.
