Jointers and Other Long Handplanes
Furniture maker Garrett Hack offers tips on how to use jointers and other long handplanes.
When most woodworkers first dip their toes into the world of handplanes, they generally start out with a block plane and a smoother. Longer jointer planes like Stanley’s venerable No. 7 and No. 8 are often forgotten, or simply misunderstood by hand tool newcomers, and that’s a mistake. Longer planes allow a woodworker to accurately joint long edges, and can even be used for rough milling on stock that’s too large for conventional milling machinery.
In this short video, furniture maker Garrett Hack demonstrates a variety of techniques for use with longer handplanes.
