Cradle in Maple, Ash and Cypress
Inspired by Fine Woodworking gallery picture I saw by Timothy Clark I embarked on a much simpler rendition. I had alot of furniture to make and I didn’t want to spend alot of time on the cradle so I used box joints instead of dovetails. The cradle is made of maple and the bottom panels made of cypress to reduce the weight. I used some ash for the trestle. The cradle locks with a simple lollipop I made on the headboard side that goes through the trestle into a mating hole on the cradle. It was very useful to undock the cradle at times and put it in my office or in the living room. My wife hated the natural wood colors and I dyed and stained the piece to her liking. I used tried and true linseed oil and nontoxic wax for the finish.
I added a headboard shot. It is kind of my dream to loan this cradle out and carve each baby’s name and year they used the cradle on the bottom and I don’t have it in my possession right now for that reason…so the pics were slim pickings.
