Arts & Crafts Sideboard
Although this project came from a “plan” – It was the most difficult project I’ve ever done. The carcase assembly was particularly challenging since all rails, dust panels, etc had to be in place at “once” and perfectly square for the drawers to work right. The carcase was 100% quartersawn Cherry, the balance was regular cherry (I ran out of quartersawn). All side panels and the back were re-sawn and glued together; the legs were veneered 360 degrees with 1/8″ thick quartersawn cherry so straight grain could be viewed in every direction, the case joinery involved double tenons on the front elevation so the drawers could be inset and finally the top grains were carefully bookmatched to show off the cathedral grain patterns. Three coats of Waterlox tung oil finish was applied with no stain to show off the beaty of the wood. If you decide to do this project, I did find several errors in the online plans that I’ve told Woodsmith about and they know it. However, I can share if interested.
