Blanket Chest
This blanket chest is pretty basic. I’ve actually made two of them, one as a wedding gift for my sister-in-law and another as a Christmas present for my brother. I used red oak, purchased from a home center. My goal was to create continuous grain around the entire chest, so I opted to use a basic rabbet joint to connect the front, back and sides. I reinforced the joint with screws and covered the holes with grain-matched plugs. For the hinges, I used a combination hinge and lid support, which prevents the lid from crashing down on unsuspecting users.

Simple construction, nice design, and easily available wood and you have ended up with 2 lovely pieces of furniture. I wish we could get oak like that in our DIY sheds all we can get in the english ones is poor quality softwood!
Thanks for the compliments...
