This is a keepsake/jewelry box that I made for my mother. I’ve been carrying a few pieces of African Mahogany around for a number of years that I salvaged out of my Grandfathers shop when he passed away. I’d been saving these pieces for just the right project when inspiration hit and I came up with this design. The box body, interior dividers, tray and top edges and center ring are from this Mahogany. The other pieces in the top are Black Walnut, Big Leaf Maple, Cherry and Wenge. Each piece of the top is a solid piece that was hand cut to fit; not a veneer. The top is beveled to lighten the edge and to help the figure in the maple come out. The legs are Bubinga ringed by more Wenge. The splines are more Mahogany. The sides of the box have been coved and hand scraped. The interior and tray is lined with deer suede. The box was hand scraped and sanded to 600 grit with a coat of Maloof’s poly/oil in between each grit and 3 coats of Maloof’s oil/wax burnished with Liberon 0000 steel wool after each coat.
