coffee table
The design of this table began with the discovery of the piece of hickory, which makes up the top. Trying to utilize as much of the board as possible, yet avoid a simple rectangular shape, I softened each side with a very subtle radius. From here I chose to use black walnut for the base in order to pick up on some of the darkness in the natural defects of the hickory. In an attempt to avoid a more traditional apron and leg assembly, I decided to work with a more sculptural arrangement of interlocking pieces. Because I’ve seen more than a couple of broken coffee tables, I connected each of the base components with mortise and tenon joinery. There are only four screws in the piece, which connect the top to the base.
