Sash Dowelling Boxes
Sash dowelling boxes were used to hold a sash bar steady while a hole was drilled in the end for a dowel. They were usually made by a craftsman. Methods of holding the bar on the sides include moveable inset panels, moveable sides, inserted shims and fixed width. The vertical clamping is done with a screw on the top. The block holding the drill bit guide could be moved vertically to accomodate various depths of sash bars. I made seven of these replicas to go with my collection of English Sashmaker’s tools. With the exception of the Rees box the boxes were made from photos or images captured from ebay. If originals of this type of tool can be found they generally sell for around $1,000. This is one of the reasons I decided to make the replicas. An article and photos of the other boxes can be found at the URL: http://www.wkfinetools.com/cCorner/art/sashDowBoxes/sashDowBox1.asp
