This is a domino table that I made for my father in law.  On his last visit he told me he wanted a domino table so I took him to the local flea market to pick one up but he wasn’t particularly pleased with what was available so I decided that this would be a great use for some nice walnut boards that I had recently aquired.  The design started out like most other domino tables out there but as I continued to work on the design, I wanted to upgrade it from a portable game table to a piece of furniture.  I knew that him and his wife liked the cabriole style legs from other furniture in thier home, so I went with that.  I modified it quite a bit because I didn’t want the table to feel too heavy (in retrospect I would probably make the legs thicker in future versions).  I thought the legs were too thin initially, but due to the way I oriented the legs to the table I was pretty much happy with the outcome.  I also decided to use laminate for the top in place of the epoxy bar finish that most other domino tables utilize for it’s scratch resistance.  I also didn’t include the bored in cup holders that most tables have.  The goal was to have a nice piece of furniture that could be used to play many different games as well as look good as a permanent piece in the home.  My father in law was quite happy with the piece so I guess that means mission accomplished.

This piece is made of solid walnut with a plywood insert covered in laminate for the playing surface.  There is a chamfer on the bottom of the table edge, and a beading detail on the bottom of theskirts.  I had contemplated a drawer to hold the dominos and racks but instead decided on building a box to hold these items.  The box and racks were custom made so that although the table isn’t portable the dominos and the racks are.  There is also some hand in-lay work on the lid of the box (this is my first attempt and although I am not thrilled, it turned out okay). The finish is one coat of medium walnut danish oil, two coats of semi-gloss wipe-on poly, and two coats of wax buffed to a soft luster.  I hope that you all enjoy my posting and happy holidays.  This is my first posting, so all comments are welcome.
