Both the altar and the cross are constructed of Quarter-Sawn White Oak. The top of the altar is book-matched. Each leg of the altar is constructed in true Stickley-style so that each side exhibits face grain, with the grain wrapping around the sides of each leg. The construction of the altar consists of 28 mortise and tenon joints (20 of which are exposed). The exposed tenons are pillow-topped. The cross consists of 5 lap joints, 4 thru-mortises, and 1 hidden mortise and tenon joint. The pieces come together in a kind of interlocking puzzle eliminating the need for any fastening hardware whatsoever.
