I made this box as a wedding present for friends. I did initial thicknessing of stock with machines and the rest of the work with hand tools. The dovetails are hand-cut and the oil and wax finish is applied directly over the handplaned surfaces. The curly maple came as scrap from another woodworker. The chip-carved top is basswood. The walnut came from my parents’ bedroom suite (c.1946) which was water damaged during storage. I decided to use walnut from the headboard in the box as a way of passing on good wishes from my mother who died before I completed the box and who knew the couple.
