Poppy Table
I was inspired by Robert Lang, one of the editors for Popular Woodworking magazine to build this table back in 2006 when his article appeared. It is a Gustav Stickley design from 1896. I finally found a client who wanted one and decided to make two so that I would have one for myself. I didn’t follow all of Mr. Lang’s joinery techniques since I have no experience with hand cut dovetails (will in near future). Instead, I used 3/8″ and 1/4″ dowel pins and pocket screws to secure the frame to the legs (noted in one of the pictures). I like the Green and Green use of ebony plugs to cover screw holes, so added them to the legs lower shelf screw holes.
The wood is jatoba, birds eye maple and African blackwood for the plugs. I finished the tables with one coat of Bush Oil followed by two coats of sprayed on catalyzed lacquer. This is the first time I ever did any carving, fortunately it was simple and went well.
Thanks Robert, I would not have attempted the tables without your guidance.
